It’s about twenty years since the first “Gran Turismo” game appeared, and those who have followed the series since the start know that “Gran Turismo” games do not just grow on trees.
So far, only six full-featured “Gran Turismo” games have appeared, a bunch of limited prologic games, as well as some special releases based on existing games.
Then we have also got one more, “Gran Turismo Sport”, which after several delays has finally appeared. Let it be said at the earliest: “Gran Turismo Sport” does not feel like a full game in the series. At the same time it is not a typical “interlude” ala prologue.
Just that, we had a good idea when the undersigned was present during the announcement of the game before the summer of last year. Then it was almost talked about e-sports and FIA races, than the game itself and the content otherwise.
For our part, we were not terribly impressed with what was served at that time. Then it did not take long before the first postponement of the game came. Basically, we were promised that the game should come in November 2016. Now it’s been almost a year and a half since I first tried the game and luckily it has happened a while since. If it really has happened enough is another matter.
Did this take over four years to create?
Frankly, we had expected a little more of “Gran Turismo Sport”, considering both the postponements and previous games, but also considering that it’s now over four years since “Gran Turismo 6” came out for Playstation 3. For comparison there have been four “Forza” games for the Xbox One since then.
It’s not going to happen except that this is quite thin, after all. You can look far after most of our previous games in the series. Career mode, if we can call it, is jelly-thin. You have a driving school you have to go through, a mode that offers skill challenges, and a mode where you master the skills of each of the courses in the game.
You also have an arcade mode, where you can choose your car and track, and type of race. This is by the way the only one that can be played without being connected to the Internet, and then without your progress being saved.
Fewer places to drive
The number of courses is by the way something that has been greatly reduced from before. “Gran Turismo Sport” is launched with 17 courses and a total of 28 different variations, but it will appear more in the long run. If the game comes up in “Gran Turismo 6″‘s 100 course variations, it’s also doubtful.
The car committee, which has been one of the series’s biggest selling points, is far less than before. In fact, we are almost back at the 1998 level when the first “Gran Turismo” game offered 140 cars. In “Gran Turismo Sport” you have initially 163 cars to choose from – about 1000 fewer cars than in the previous game. In return, all the cars this time are so-called premium cars, with nice graphics and high level of detail.
Main fouks on serious racing
As mentioned earlier, this time e-sport is the main focus, in the form of Sport mode. There are up to tournaments with qualifications and online races, and rankings in continents, nations and automakers. Most of the time in cooperation with the international sports association, FIA.
It’s a pretty natural continuation of some of the Polyphony and Gran Turismo has been doing before, where they have let the best “Gran Turismo” players get into real racing. Some of the former “Gran Turismo” players today are skilled racing drivers with professional contracts.
To emphasize seriousness, Polyphony has added a system that pays to run nicely, including not crashing into opponents, pushing them off the track or blocking faster drivers.
How you behave is measured in SR (Sportsmanship Rating), and is updated continuously as you drive. So far, the majority of online players do not seem to care much about their SR level, because there is still a lot of knuffing and unfinished driving.
